This is Janet’s tenth studio album, and her first on Island Def Jam Records. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, making it Janet’s sixth number one album.
After the commercial flops that were Damita Jo (2004) and 20 Y.O. (2006), this is to be Janet Jackson’s comeback album. A comeback it may be, but this album wouldn’t skyrocket her back to her 1980s peak (think Control (1986) and Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989))
The 22-tracked album looked excessive, but nine are interludes, which seemed to be her trademark in recent albums. The album starts strong, but it mellowed in the middle with Janet’s whispery vocals.
The electric lead single Feedback is bound to get you on your feet thumping to the heavy bass, with producer Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins behind the reins.
Rock with You, her second single, sees Janet working with current beau, Jermaine Dupri. Her sensual vocals combined with the sexy lounge feel, makes another chart topper, no doubt.
So Much Betta, where Janet dons an android-synthesized vocal, is the experimental track on the album, which really worked out great for this release.
Another favourite would be The 1 with Missy Elliot. The groovy beats and cymbals make this a radio-friendly song.
It seems that with fresh blood on the production team, Janet’s churning out some hits, but some tracks were best left out of the release. The title track Discipline, a S&M laden song, would probably have listeners pressing the skip button.
Discipline is sure to bring Janet to the spotlight again, but it would have to take more than discipline to have the lights stay on her.
